Recently, StaffBuffalo was working with a fantastic CPA candidate looking to transition out of Public or from Public to another local Public firm. This candidate interviewed at one company, feeling lost, before reaching out to StaffBuffalo for advice on their job search. It was very important that we listened to their concerns, understood their career goals, and sense of urgency, with an Offer already pending. Our candidate was looking to specialize in a specific area, within Tax and we were able to deliver multiple local Public Accounting firms and options for them to choose from, ranging from size, location, specialties, and culture, ensuring they had a specialization for what the candidate was targeting.
We immediately reached out to our contacts at the Public Accounting Firms the candidate was interested in, explaining they had an Offer pending, getting the candidate scheduled immediately for interviews. KEY TIPS
Do not get hung up on titles: Public Accounting is structured much differently compared to Private organizations. Private companies typically don’t have the capacity to promote yearly or consistently give out Accounting Manager and Controller titles. Starting as a Senior Accountant is not uncommon. Too many candidates let the title dictate their next move out of Public and miss out on fantastic opportunities at great organizations that value their people and set them up for success.
Don’t be so focused on staying in Public Accounting until Manager: Believe it or not, when our clients are considering candidates for Director level roles, they are targeting candidates with blended Pubic and Private (industry) Accounting experience. Oftentimes, our CPAs who leave Public Accounting around Senior/Supervisor and spend a few years in the industry are getting these high-level roles, over candidates who are coming out of Public Accounting, as a Manager. Clients love to see industry experience, giving those CPAs an extra edge on the candidate pool.
